Current Greater Castle Rock Art Guild Happenings:

The current Call for Entry is “WATER.” Karen Kirkpatrick is chairing this exhibit. The deadline is July 15th and the drop off is Sunday, July20th 1-2 PM. The reception will be held on July 25th, 5-9 PM. Please submit your entries to klkimages@earthlink.net. This coming week, July 10th - 13th, Thursday through Sunday, Albert Handell will be conducting a 4-day plein air workshop for the Pastel Society of Colorado at ART ON THE EDGE. The center will be closed to the public from 9-5 each day but will open from 5-8 PM on Thursday and 5-9 PM on Friday and Saturday. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause. The teen classes and all evening classes will be conducted as scheduled. There is NO monthly meeting in July. This was decided last year because of vacations and preparation for school openings.

1. Glass Etching with PJ Lenorovitz – This Class will be scheduled in August

Join PJ Lenorovitz at her studio. She will teach an intro class on how to Etch on Glass PJ has graciously offered to give a class during the time her beautiful etched glasswork is on exhibit at Art on the Edge. Students will be introduced to 2 methods used in glass etching and the equipment used. They will complete two projects.

What to Bring: In order to participate each student will need to bring a dust mask, clean leather or garden gloves, an Xactor knife and blades, an old long sleeved shirt that they don’t mind getting dirty and earplugs. Also if students wish to bring a snack and drink (in a non-spill container) that is fine.

2. Fused Glass Workshop with Wrenn Boulton

Learn how to create a masterpiece in layering and firing glass. Wrenn has been doing fused glass jewelry, dishes and other art objects for over 30 years. She loves teaching and creating.

3. Stained Glass with Cliff Wallace and Don Griffin

how to cut, sand and create a small masterpiece in stained glass with the help from two fun and skilled artisans. When students are comfortable with advanced projects, an advanced class with Cliff Wallace will be added.

5. Precious Metal Clay Jewelry

a. Beginning PMC Workshop with Eric Joegensen & Tamara Culp.

Precious metal clay is a wonderful medium to work in since you can form, cut, roll or mold is into any shape you wish with this 99.9999% pure silver.  The result of your creation(s) are fired and then you finish them via a variety of method choices.  This introductory class is a must for anyone who has not worked in this type of clay before.
Goals.

  1. How to manage this clay to make a pendant.
  2. How to roll and shape
  3. How to clean
  4. How to do simple finishes after firing
  5. Complete at least one pendant which is your to keep

Date: Saturday, June 21st 10:00am until 4:00p

Who Should Attend: Anyone interested in learning about precious metal clay and/or who intends to take additional classes. This is a prerequisite for any other PMC classes we offer.

LOOKING AHEAD: There will be an advanced class with Tamara Culp in July. You must have taken an intro class from someone first.

In this class you will learn the following techniques for Metal Clay:

  1. How to roll out and texture metal clay.
  2. How to create and use a template.
  3. How to properly attach wet clay to dry clay in layers to create depth, texture and interest.
  4. How to attach dry clay to dry clay to construct a bail for you pendant.
  5. How to refine your clay in the wet and dry states.
  6. How to burnish and polish your fired silver.
  7. How to paint with Liver of Sulphur to achieve a patina in a variety of complimentary on your silver and then protect those colors with a micro-crystalline wax.

Dates: This is a two-day workshop: Saturday, July 26th from 10:00am until 4:00pm and Sunday, July 27th from 10:00am until 4:00pm.

6 Ceramic Clay – Pottery & Sculpture

 Ceramic Art Tiles with Brite Niezek
Brite will be teaching a three-session class using slab tiles as a “canvas”. She will teach you how to carve a stamp, design and make your clay art piece and glaze it.

This is a three-session workshop with several weeks between firings and before pickup.

Dates: Saturdays, July 19th and 26th and August 16th. Art pieces will be available for pick up on August 25th after the second firing.
Time: 10 am – 12 noon.

      1. July 19 – Stamp Making
      2. July 26 – Tile Making
      3. Aug 2nd – Class hiatus
      4. Aug 9th – Class hiatus – Brite performs Bisque firing (8 hour)
      5. Aug 16th- Glazing
      6. Aug 23rd – Class hiatus – Brite performs Glaze firing (12 hours)
      7. Aug 24th – Kiln Cool-down (requires 24 hours from time firing is done)
      8. Aug 25th – Brite will drop off finished pieces during lunch break at work (around 12:30 pm). Students can pick up pieces anytime after that)

7. Turning Desires: Beginning and intermediate Wood Burning Workshops

Learn introduction on the tools, woods, burning techniques, coloring and of course safety of wood burning. Whether you want to create a masterpiece in wood or crafts for friends, wood burning is a fun and creative art form. You don’t have to be great at drawing or art to participate but time, enthusiasm and patients is valuable.

Goals:

      1. Beginning students will learn basic techniques: how to use your wood-burner and pens; tracing patterns; to burn on wood using basic pens; burning from straight lines to curved lines and shading.
      2. Intermediate students will learn how to improve your techniques: burn using different Tips, variation in woods, coloring techniques, etc.

Dates:  Classes will start on the third Wednesday of the month starting May 21st, June 18th and July 16th, August 20th, September 17th, etc.
Time: 6-8 pm
Number of Students: Classes are small and will fill up quickly.
Who Should Attend: Anyone interested in learning about wood burning and/or getting back into this medium.
